Palais Quartier’s impending Grand Opening on 26 Feb 09

We were in Frankfurt yesterday.

The grand opening is only six days away…

I overheard one passerby telling his wife “Das ist das meist fotographierte Loch in …” (that’s the most photographed hole in …) with the end of the sentence floating away. He is right as I observed others, some with professional gear, taking photos as well. This is one engineering design I find truly fascinating.

This view clearly shows how brownish the old Frankfurt is in comparison to the new corner of Palais Quartier.

Palais Quartier – futuresque image of Frankfurt

While taking another short trip to Frankfurt – we have an out-of-country visitor here – I got to see Palais Quartier’s construction progress, which is just simply amazing. Those guys must be putting in 16-hour work days!!!

Not only is the progress remarkable, but the design is magnificent as well.

A galactic hole in the roof – this must be even more brilliant at night. Hats off to the local architects!!!

It is a truly scientific archetype of our future.

Palais Quartier construction tilts heads skyward

We had to take another trip to Frankfurt. Somebody should have told me that teens and preteens love to see movies – ours especially the original English version of a new film. So we dropped off my daughter at the somewhat seedy Turmpalast to watch High School Musical III. And while she was watching the movie, we had the chance to stroll around a bit again.

Will the new Palais Quartier be furnished with a movie theater? I sure would like to think so. The current and only movie theater showing box-office films in English is in dire straits in regards to standards. My kids love it nevertheless as it is the ONLY one.

Having searched the internet, I have come up with all kinds of information as to what the new shopping mecca has to to offer – from a sauna, noble boutiques, office space, a daycare center and other attractions — but no mention was made anywhere about a new movie theater.

Driving into Frankfurt on Nov 1, 2008 at 5:00 p.m.

Frankfurt was packed on November 1. Due to All Saints Day (Allerheiligen) being a public holiday in the neighboring states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, a great many extra shoppers came to Frankfurt. Foot traffic was also slowed down a bit as lots of people looked up at the construction site. (In a recent study, more than 14,000 people had been counted strolling the Zeil within an hour.) This time also we could only find a parking space on the sixth floor of a Parkhaus when we usually can get one on the second floor.

Construction also continued throughout Saturday. We saw helmeted workers operating machines in the darkness until 7:00. Surely, on Sunday, the Germans’ beloved Ruhetag had to be observed.

A bit ruhiger – and that just about three miles out of the city – one finds pastures with grazing horses with the Frankfurt’s skyline as the backdrop.

Living in Frankfurt and its vicinity is getting better all the time.
