German Word of the Day: die Einfahrt

This must be one of the most beloved words for learners of German. The word Fahrt itself stands for drive, ride, trip, etc. Einfahrt means entrance, gateway to Autobahn, etc.

It has nothing to do with fart, even though most learners associate its sound with that. This can provide some giggles.

This photo was taken in Oberursel and it shows the entrance to a Getränkemarkt (beverage shop).

Zitat des Tages

Im tiefsten Winter fand ich heraus, dass ich, tief in mir, einen unsterblichen Sommer mit mir trug.
In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.

German Lesson: der Brunnen

Some expats new to the area asked about the meaning of the word Brunnen and Brunnenfest in general. The German word Brunnen stands for fountain, well, and natural spring. The town of Oberursel has more than 60 fountains.

For the Oberursel Brunnenfest, each year a new Brunnenkönigin (fountain queen) gets chosen. This years’s Brunnenkönigin, Nadine I. represented Brunnenfest 2016, and one part of her official duties is to inaugurate the next fountain for the year.

This year’s fountain was the Urselbachbrunnen, located at the ‘Haus am Urselbach’. (Urselbach stands for Ursel Creek)

There are 26 fountains belonging to the town of Oberursel, and about another 40 fountains are in private hands.

German Lesson: der Kunstfehler

The word Kunstfehler is made up of die Kunst (the arts) and der Fehler (the mistake). But the meaning is not a “mistake of the arts”, but  a common term used for a doctor’s malpractice. Another word used is der Behandlungsfehler (error in treatment).

It just caught my attention, because I expected no association between science and art. When treatment goes well, it is medical science. When treatment goes bad, the German language blames it on the arts. 🙂

BodyTruths

The number of malpractice suits in Germany is on the rise. This is not because doctors make more mistakes, but instead, more patients take action if there is a suspicion of malpractice.
