Newcomers Festival 2014 in Frankfurt

The annual Newcomers Festival is taking place at the Römer in Frankfurt on Sunday, 7 September 2014 from 1pm – 6pm.

This event is not only for new expats to the area, but also for the ones who settled here a while ago! There is an exhibition of services put together by about 60 clubs and organizations.

All visitors will receive a free copy of the 2015 Newcomers Guide – a 120-page English-language book about living and working in Frankfurt-Rhein-Main.

Admission is free.

Guided Tour of Camp King Oberursel

On Saturday, 31 August, 2013, the local historian Manfred Kopp is going to give a tour of an area in Oberursel known as “Camp King” . The tours take place in May and August every year.

The tour covers the history of the area from the Reichssiedlungshof in the 1930s, through the time of the Dulag Luft, up to the end of the U.S. Army presence in 1992.

The meeting point is the Kinderhaus Camp King, Jean-Sauer-Weg 2  at 2 pm, and the tour costs 3 euro.

This is a good opportunity for local residents to learn more about the history of the area that they live in.

Father’s Day in Germany

My German niece has just reminded that German Father’s Day is only two days away (9 May  2013).  I had only thought of our upcoming trip to London, where we will spend part of the German Mother’s Day (second Sunday in May) at a Sri Lankan wedding.

Father’s Day in Germany is always celebrated on the religious holiday of Christi Himmelfahrt (Ascension Day), which is also the 40th day after Easter. Some relate to this holiday also as Männertag or Herrentag.

In 1936, Christi Himmelfahrt became a national holiday.

Here in Germany, this holiday is always on a Thursday, with schools closed on Fridays and families get to enjoy a four-day weekend.

There are quite a few get-togethers with only males roaming the countryside with lots of beer on board. Hence, Männertag oder Herrentag.

Day of German Unity

The Tag der Deutschen Einheit (“Day of German Unity”) is celebrated each year as a public holiday on 3rd October. In 1990 it replaced the previous holidays of 17th June in West Germany and 7th October in East Germany.

The main celebrations are held in the capital city of a different state each year.

The date was chosen arbitrarily and celebrates the day in 1990 when re-unification took place. Celebrating the day the Berlin Wall fell was felt inappropriate, as by co-incidence it is also the anniversary of the Reichspogromnacht in 1938.
