German Word of the Day: der Kassenzettel (receipt)

Recently, when shopping at our nearby supermarket, I noticed a different quality and color in the receipt paper. The first time, I figured it was just the end of the paper roll. Today’s receipt looked the same, so I finally took a closer look, and found the explanation on the back of it.

Up until now, receipts from EDEKA supermarket, used to be white in color, and somewhat shiny due to their chemical lining. Hence, they were not meant for the paper trash, but the plastic trash. All this has changed.

Environmentally friendly receipts

The new receipts are better for the environment. See pointers.

  • ohne chemische Farbentwickler (without chemical color enhancer)
  • über das Altpapier entsorgen und recycelbar (please add to the paper bin, it is recycable)
  • beständig gegen Umwelteinflüsse (resistant against environmental impacts)
  • zugelassen für den direkten Kontakt mit Lebensmittel (paper approved for direct contact with dry goods)

This is a good sign in regards to our environment. When we use fewer chemicals and reduce plastic trash, we’re heading in the right direction. Thank you, EDEKA.

German Lesson: der Kunstfehler

The word Kunstfehler is made up of die Kunst (the arts) and der Fehler (the mistake). But the meaning is not a “mistake of the arts”, but  a common term used for a doctor’s malpractice. Another word used is der Behandlungsfehler (error in treatment).

It just caught my attention, because I expected no association between science and art. When treatment goes well, it is medical science. When treatment goes bad, the German language blames it on the arts. 🙂

BodyTruths

The number of malpractice suits in Germany is on the rise. This is not because doctors make more mistakes, but instead, more patients take action if there is a suspicion of malpractice.

German Lesson: die Revierförsterei

There is an old Norwegian idiom, Man sieht den Wald vor lauter Bäumen nicht (You can’t see the wood for the trees) and it rings true as I have passed this wooden sign many times in my 19 years in Oberursel without paying much attention. Until now.

It’s located at the cross section of Hohemarkstrasse and An der Waldlust.

Today’s vocabulary:

das Revier: terrritory, district, field, region

die Försterei: forestry

The Revierförsterei is the home and place of work of the district forest ranger.

German Autobahn goes Emoticon

Driving down the Autobahn somewhere between Celle and Frankfurt, we encountered our first smiley faces along the way.

The first one was to announce construction work being done, slowing down traffic for another 4 km.

Autobahn

The second one announced the end of it. Geschafft = Done with it!

Autobahn geschafft

For some reason, these smiley faces do their job. This way, I know some younger people are on the Autobahn force.
