Baroque Castle in Werneck, Bavaria

For our most recent visit to my hometown, we decided to book a room at a brewery inn in Werneck (district of Lower Franconia in northern Bavaria). It was a good and convenient choice, as we only had to walk about a minute to reach the castle grounds.

I left home 40 years ago, and nowadays I’m trying catch up on local sights I missed to see when I was young.

We had picked a glorious day to take a stroll through the park.

Baroque Castle Werneck in spring time

Balthasar Neumann, Würzburg’s most famous architect of his time, had built this castle for the Prince Bishop, Friedrich Carl von Schönborn, between 1733 – 1745.

This historical postcard is part of my private collection.

The castle houses both a psychiatric and an orthopedic clinic.

The café, chapel, and park can be accessed by the public.

Public Pool gets blasted in Oberursel

In case you get to hear some 50 kg of explosives going off this morning in Oberursel, rest assured. This explosion is only to detonate the old public swimming pool, which has already been stripped down to its skeleton framework.

The detonation has been set for 11 a.m. today – on 4 June 2013. As nobody can be within 150 m reach, there will be no private filming. But the detonation crew will record it and make it available to the city as well as the local press.

A good Aerial view of the old pool.

The new swimming pool will cost the city about 14 million euro. Maintaining the pool will add another 600.000 euro – 1.000.000 euro to its yearly budget plan.

There has been much discussion whether the city can afford all this.

Free Books at Rushmoor Park Oberursel

In July 2011, a typical English phone booth at Rushmoor Park in Oberursel opened its doors to become host to another public library.

Since it is open to the public, anybody can borrow a book or drop one off. You can sit down and read on the spot (there are some benches for your convenience) or take the book/books home.

There is no signing in or out – feel free to take what you need. Of course, you can also drop off your unwanted books there. At the moment, among many other books, you also find three math books and a French dictionary. The range of available books keeps growing.

BookCrossing members also use this spot for a convenient drop-off. I had a notification just this morning from a member, who has registered and released three books, such as Falsetto by Anne Rice, at the phone booth at Rushmoor Park.

Either way, this is a great way for people to read books and/or meet.

Note: You do not have to be a BookCrossing member to use this facility.
