Oberursel Photo Calendar 2020

As I am about to prepare a care package with local souvenirs for our daughter in Tallahassee, FL, I ran across this picturesque photo calendar.

With Oberursel being an expat town of its own kind, there are plenty of residents who come and go, including my own family. This makes it a great souvenir for anybody who has ever lived here.

I bought this calendar for € 12,95 at the newsagent Tabak Carree Rhode at Camp King, Oberursel.

Brunnenfest 2016 in Oberursel

Here are a few impressions from the Brunnenfest 2016 in Oberursel. We had planned to have a Bratwurst and a beer, and then go home after an hour. This turned into four hours, because at a local fest like this, you realize you do know quite a few people after twenty years of living here, albeit in an ‘international bubble community’.

Rolls Royce in the Air

In mid-July, I was asked to assist in locating people’s names for a historical research regarding Rolls Royce, Oberursel. Four days later, I found myself sitting on a Lufthansa flight to London and looking out the window, I was reminded of the task – by the logo.

Rolls Royce, so close to home right here in Oberursel, is also a safe travel companion.

Once again, if you can help identify any of these people in the photos from this post Changing Hands from Motor Pool to Rolls Royce, Oberursel in 1956, then we would love to hear from you.

Pizzeria at U-Bahn Kupferhammerweg near Camp King Oberursel

Whenever I do some research about Camp King, I inevitably stumble across comments mentioning the pizzeria on Hohemarkstrasse, which is across from the U-Bahn station Kuperhammerweg, close to the former military post Camp King. Also readers of this blog do occasionally mention the pizzeria, such as L.L.H. when she stated “I was wondering, is there still the Pizza shop (as you go out what was the front gate to the left)”.

Yes, the pizzeria is still there. When we moved here in 1995, it was run by two elderly Italian men. A few years later, another Italian family took over and has been running it since then.

We are regulars at this restaurant and one of our daughter’s first words was “Toni! Toni!” when she wanted their Rigatoni dish. That was a long time ago…

Anyway, here are some photos I took while walking from Camp King down Hohemarkstrasse to the pizzeria Del Golfo.

There is construction on the other side, a new housing development called Am Urselbach is in the making. At this corner, there used to be the gate.

The U-Bahn station Kupferhammerweg was redone a number of years back.

Also the pizzeria building got a new face – the facade was repainted several years ago.

The pizzeria does good business with very good food, reasonable prices, and friendly service.

My next research will have me locate the bakery the reader L.L.H had mentioned, “also at the stop for the Ubahn there was a bakery that had some of the best breads and coffee. Would buy my coffee there for home use and have it fresh ground.”

Quotation Marks in Advertisements

There seems to be a new trend – adding quotation marks to rather simple items such as in “cheese” burger. This would imply that the burger is made with something else than real cheese on top.

Well, some Germans like to add apostrophes to ads, e.g. steak’s, T-shirt’s, etc.

See the cheese burger ad for yourself on The Guardian.

For now, Guten Appetit!, and all the while wondering, what kind of topping this could be…
