Rights of School Age Children in Germany

Over the years, I have been questioned about several issues related to minors’ rights in Germany by ex-pat parents and students alike.

Here is a short summary:

  • Germany has a compulsory school attendance law, which requires all children between the ages of six to fifteen to attend school.
  • Germany is a member of the Global Conventions Act, that protect the rights of children. This entitles them to a childhood free of emotional, mental, and physical abuse. *
  • Children under 15 may not be employed. Exceptions are made for minor jobs such as newspaper delivery routes, babysitting, taking care of pets, or other tasks which are not dangerous.
  • At the age of 14, when in presence of parents or guardians, minors are allowed to consumer beer and wine.
  • At the age of 16, minors are allowed to buy and consume beer and wine.
  • At the age of 18, they are of legal age. Therefore, they can buy and consumer beer, wine, and distilled liquor.

An Ideal Husband at the English Theatre Frankfurt

Being a big fan of Oscar Wilde, I took the opportunity to see the preview showing of An Ideal Husband at the English Theatre in Frankfurt.

Quoted from the theatre’s flyer:

“To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.” In Oscar Wilde’s play, a rising politician, Sir Robert Chiltern has the ideal career, the ideal wife and the ideal social ranking. But all of his eminence is suddenly endangered when the scheming and mysterious Mrs. Cheveley threatens to blackmail him and expose a youthful act of corruption.

As the lies, blackmail and incriminating documents come to light, it becomes clear that the man thought to be perfect is in fact flawed. Now, the man with all the flaws must do something right, and the question remains: what makes an ideal husband?

An Ideal Husband, a comedy of manners, starts playing today.

For performances between 27 Feb – 6 Mar 2010, you save 25% on your ticket (prices from € 21,00).

Shows are Tuesday – Saturday 7:30 p.m. /  Sunday 6:00 p.m.

This show was good! We had some good laughs and I also thought its choreography was excellent.

Start your evening in Frankfurt with a good show and you might want to visit newcomers.network for more information on what to do after the show.
