List of German Wedding Anniversaries and Their Symbols

A couple of years ago, we celebrated our 25-year anniversary, a.k.a. silver wedding anniversary. In the Holy Roman Empire, a husband would crown his wife with a silver wreath on their twenty-fifth anniversary, hence the silver.

In Germany, we have the following symbols assigned to each anniversary.

This coming September, we will celebrate our Carnation Wedding Anniversary. The carnation flower in itself has a slightly morbid association in Germany – they often serve  as funeral flowers.

White carnations symbolize not eternal fidelity, but they also represent the nails used at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Fortunately, its German counterpart ‘Nelke’ not only means carnation, but also clove (as in Gewürznelke).

Rolls Royce in the Air

In mid-July, I was asked to assist in locating people’s names for a historical research regarding Rolls Royce, Oberursel. Four days later, I found myself sitting on a Lufthansa flight to London and looking out the window, I was reminded of the task – by the logo.

Rolls Royce, so close to home right here in Oberursel, is also a safe travel companion.

Discriminatory Food Names in German

Just discovered the post Discriminatory food names should be banned, says Austria – Telegraph.

Well, come to think of it, it might be time to clean up the cuisine, that is if you have no other fish to fry.

Zigeunerschnitzel (gypsy schnitzel) could be derogatory towards gypsies, but I have always liked the colorful array of paprika slices on the pork cutlet. It added a nice Hungarian touch to it.

Had never heard of Negerbrot (n… bread) before, but there is even a Facebook fan page for it.
