Oberursel, Fountain Queen, and Market Square

Sitting there at the ‘Marktweib’ Restaurant, I caught a glimpse of this year’s Fountain Queen (Brunnenkönigin), Ann-Kathrin I, along with the Brunnenmeister, Rainer. For a better image of her, click here: http://www.vereinsring-oberursel.de/html/brunnenkoenigin.html

Market Square in Oberursel

View onto St. Ursula Church and a couple of restaurants with outdoor seating. A few minutes after having taken this photo, I was sitting there myself with a beer in hand.

In the Altstadt, you can still find a mounting block for horses in front of someone’s door. Those were the days of real horse power.

Oberursel has its charms, and we still discover interesting nooks and corners after having lived here for 22 years.

German Lesson: der Brunnen

Some expats new to the area asked about the meaning of the word Brunnen and Brunnenfest in general. The German word Brunnen stands for fountain, well, and natural spring. The town of Oberursel has more than 60 fountains.

For the Oberursel Brunnenfest, each year a new Brunnenkönigin (fountain queen) gets chosen. This years’s Brunnenkönigin, Nadine I. represented Brunnenfest 2016, and one part of her official duties is to inaugurate the next fountain for the year.

This year’s fountain was the Urselbachbrunnen, located at the ‘Haus am Urselbach’. (Urselbach stands for Ursel Creek)

There are 26 fountains belonging to the town of Oberursel, and about another 40 fountains are in private hands.

German Lesson: der Altkleidercontainer

Just recently, the city of Oberursel distributed new Altkleidercontainer (recycle container for clothing). The official term is actually Wertstoffsammelbehälter für Altkleider, but most Germans don’t use this term.

The new design is very pretty, showcasing an image of a fountain in Oberursel’s Altstadt. Oberursel is the Brunnenstadt (city of fountains) with close to 50 fountains spread out over the town.

These containers got a new design to differentiate them from the commercial ones. In some spots, you still see the official Red Cross containers. If you deposit your recycled clothing in one of these containers, it will go to a good cause. All others are of commercial use.
