German Lesson: die Revierförsterei

There is an old Norwegian idiom, Man sieht den Wald vor lauter Bäumen nicht (You can’t see the wood for the trees) and it rings true as I have passed this wooden sign many times in my 19 years in Oberursel without paying much attention. Until now.

It’s located at the cross section of Hohemarkstrasse and An der Waldlust.

Today’s vocabulary:

das Revier: terrritory, district, field, region

die Försterei: forestry

The Revierförsterei is the home and place of work of the district forest ranger.

German Lesson: die Hundebadestelle

Most German areas are rather dog friendly, so we were not surprised to find designated stretches of beach labeled Hundebadestelle (dog bathing area).

This photo was taken along the Baltic Sea shore.

Mountain Lodge Oberursel under Construction

I took another walk around the Camp King area this afternoon. We live so close by (a five-minute walk), but yet so far away. It was a very humid and overcast afternoon .

Camp King’s ‘Mountain Lodge’, seen from south.  Children still have plenty of room to play soccer on a humid summer afternoon. There was also some activity going on in front of the chapel further up. This could have been organized by the Waldorf Schule, which uses the chapel for its drama department activities throughout the school year. It looked like a school parents’ picnic (with beer benches). The Hessians’ last day of school is this coming Friday.

If you’re interested in buying an apartment, you’d better hurry.  There are still two available. “Verkauft” means sold.

The advertisement sign indicated that the apartments would be ready for moving in by the end of this year. Being German myself, I know to add at least another six months to this kind of promise.

Apartments for Sale at the Mountain Lodge in Camp King Oberursel

After having just toured the old Mountain Lodge for the special event Airlift Frankfurt – Berlin with special guest Col. Halvorsen (Ret.), I had the chance to take some photos showing the new plans for the future apartment building.

The southern side will get a terrace.

The advertisement offers 10 luxurious apartments varying in size and style between 100 qm and 260 qm. Due to its unique location and many added amenities, the price per qm is euro 4.250.

Parking will be available on the north side of the building. The investor has purchased the plot of land across from it and this will be turned into carports and a parking lot.

Yes, if I had the money, I would be interested in purchasing one of the apartments. They are supposed to be finished by the end of 2014.

Words for Teenagers by a Judge

Quoted from a newspaper article (source unknown):

Northland College principal John Tapene has offered the following words from a judge who regularly deals with youth. “Always we hear the cry from teenagers, ‘what can we do, where can we go?’

“My answer is this: Go home, mow the lawn, wash the windows, learn to cook, build a raft, get a job, visit the sick, study your lessons and after you’ve finished, read a book. Your town does not owe you recreational facilities and your parents do not owe you fun.

“The world does not owe you a living, you owe the world something. You owe it your time, energy and talent so that no one will be at war, in sickness and lonely again. In other words, grow up, stop being a cry baby, get out of your dream world and develop a backbone, not a wishbone. Start behaving like a responsible person. You are important and you are needed. It’s too late to sit around and wait for somebody to do something someday. Someday is now and that somebody is you!”

Our town of Oberursel lacks recreational facilities, too. This becomes obvious when the young ones gather any time of day at the nearby park and some residents at the housing area Camp King felt bothered.

For a while, police cars came through the area discouraging their gatherings.

Too much time, early school dismissal, lack of motivation, their sense of entitlement, lack of role models at home and in school, joblessness, etc. are no excuse for idle living.
