First English Book Case in Frankfurt

Sharing the newsletter sent out by the English Theatre Frankfurt on 30 October 2013.

Quoting:

On Thursday 24th October 2013, the English Theatre Frankfurt (ETF) opened Europe’s first public book case exclusively for books written in English.

Our guests of honor were Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann and the former Mayor of Cultural Affairs, Hilmar Hoffmann, among other wonderful friends of the ETF.

The book case works like this:

People are invited to leave books for others to take, like a book exchange in a public space. We believe this will work splendidly in front of our main entrance, as the performances draw not only thousands of teachers and students but also native speakers who live and work in Frankfurt as well as people who are generally interested in the English language.

The ETF has taken on the responsibility for the book case. Our staff will make sure that the book case is clean and that there are no inappropriate books on display.

Please join us in launching our book case by bringing an English book with you to the previews of Saturday Night Fever, or when passing by the theatre. Whether it’s a classroom favorite or a personal favorite, your book will help make the first English book case in Frankfurt a success.

Please pass this message on to your friends who might want to contribute to the first public book case IN ENGLISH.

Oberursel Reforestation Project

Time for planting!

A healthy stretch of forest in Oberursel

In honor of the 50th anniversary of Frankfurt International School (FIS), the school has begun a partnership with local forestry authorities to join in protecting local environment, while at the same time using it for teaching opportunities.

Today, the grade Grade 7 students got the opportunity to apply their science knowledge about deforestation and the importance of trees, and then joined forces to take action.

On a slope in the forest about 1km above FIS, a storm has caused some deforestation. Students and teachers collaborated with foresters to plant trees in that location. FIS donated the funds for 400 trees and students participated in the planting.

In the future, FIS will continue to help maintain the reforested area and integrate this action in their science and environmental citizenship curricula.

Today, all seventh graders walked into the woods and planted seedlings together. They helped with digging holes, planted trees, and learned about the forest in guided tours with the foresters.

Die Zuschlagmarke

Die Zuschlagmarke is a type of stamp that has two face values: one for the postage and another for a special cause, eg. 55+25

These sorts of stamps often appear before Christmas and include a small donation to a charity. In the above example 55 cents would be the postage for a letter and 25 cents would be the donation.

The donation is not allowed to be higher than half the value of the postage itself, although this has not always been the case and stamps used to be produced with values such as 12+38.
