Oberursel and its first Outdoor Swimming Pool

The very first swimming pool was built by the Motorenfabrik Oberursel (Motor Pool) in 1927.

The engineer Helmut Stein, who had joined the Motorenfabrik in 1925, initiated the construction of this Werksschwimmbad (factory-run pool for its staff and families). Other facilities, such as sport fields and a shooting range, were added later.

The company supplied the material, and construction was completed by its own workers after working hours.

During the summer months, swimming lessons were given to the young vocational trainees. It soon became a social meeting point for its workers and families.

The city of Oberursel itself had to wait another decade for its own public pool (see postcard). Construction went from 1934 – 1936, and its Grand Opening took place on 7 June 1937.

German Autobahn Trivia and More

The Local Germany has gathered eight interesting facts about the Autobahn. In turn, I have a few of my own to add.

  • Back in 1847, they’d already had speed limits. Based on an archived newsletter from the town of Regensburg dated April of that same year, four people were charged a fine because of speeding in a horse-drawn carriage.
  • In 2015, the car maker VW sold 7.2 million sausages to its employees from its factory-owned sausage production. Those same employees sold 5.82 million cars that same year.
  • When you google Autobahn Germany, you get 535.000 results, whereas for Autobahn Deutschland you get 6.300.000 results
  • How much is a kilometer of Autobahn? The average cost per kilometer runs between 6 million and 20 million euro. Some parts of the Autobahn construction costs can reach astronomical heights, when it comes to adding tunnels and viaducts. Take Berlin, e.g. the extension of the A100 in Berlin by 3.2 km is so far the most expensive stretch of Autobahn: 470 million euro for 3.2 km.
  • German mini-lesson: der Geisterfahrer (literal translation: ghost driver) This is someone driving down the wrong side of the road. You might hear this on the radio: “Attention all drivers on the A xx, there’s a car heading in the wrong direction, please stay on the right-hand lane and do not overtake.” or “An alle Autofahrer, auf der A xx  ist ein Geisterfahrer unterwegs. Bitte fahren Sie auf der rechten Spur.”

The Mountain Lodge at Camp King Oberursel in January 2015

The contractor’s advertisement had announced the apartments would probably be ready by the end of the year 2014.

As with any old building, more work has probably turned up, and moving in has been delayed.

The building’s addition on the left is going to be part of the new entrance hall.

Visit www.studio-aw.de and click on the images lodge 14 and lodge 16 to get an idea what it will look like once construction is finished.

Mountain Lodge Oberursel under Construction

I took another walk around the Camp King area this afternoon. We live so close by (a five-minute walk), but yet so far away. It was a very humid and overcast afternoon .

Camp King’s ‘Mountain Lodge’, seen from south.  Children still have plenty of room to play soccer on a humid summer afternoon. There was also some activity going on in front of the chapel further up. This could have been organized by the Waldorf Schule, which uses the chapel for its drama department activities throughout the school year. It looked like a school parents’ picnic (with beer benches). The Hessians’ last day of school is this coming Friday.

If you’re interested in buying an apartment, you’d better hurry.  There are still two available. “Verkauft” means sold.

The advertisement sign indicated that the apartments would be ready for moving in by the end of this year. Being German myself, I know to add at least another six months to this kind of promise.

Public Pool gets blasted in Oberursel

In case you get to hear some 50 kg of explosives going off this morning in Oberursel, rest assured. This explosion is only to detonate the old public swimming pool, which has already been stripped down to its skeleton framework.

The detonation has been set for 11 a.m. today – on 4 June 2013. As nobody can be within 150 m reach, there will be no private filming. But the detonation crew will record it and make it available to the city as well as the local press.

A good Aerial view of the old pool.

The new swimming pool will cost the city about 14 million euro. Maintaining the pool will add another 600.000 euro – 1.000.000 euro to its yearly budget plan.

There has been much discussion whether the city can afford all this.
