German Lesson: Schillerlocken

This fish shop sold Schillerlocken (on the right), a term I had not associated with fish. Schiller, of course, made me think of Friedrich Schiller, and Locken are curls.

* Where does this term come from?

The term is coined after its resemblance to Friedrich Schiller’s long curls.

* What are Schillerlocken?

This part is the belly side of the Dornhai (Hai: shark), one of the shark species.

* How do you eat them?

I observed a family of four ordering four Schillerlocken, which then were served in a German bread roll and they were also offered the Danish curry sauce, which they declined.

I have never tried it and while searching the net, I found various sources of alarming notes.

This type of shark has been over-fished, and its meat contains a dangerously high level of Methylquecksilber (methyl mercury) as well.

German Lesson: die Hundebadestelle

Most German areas are rather dog friendly, so we were not surprised to find designated stretches of beach labeled Hundebadestelle (dog bathing area).

This photo was taken along the Baltic Sea shore.

German Lesson: die Milch-Tankstelle

Between the towns of Kappeln and Schönhagen at the Baltic Sea, we passed this Milch-Tankstelle, which is run by a local farmer. Tankstelle (f) by itself stands for filling station. Add the milk in front of it, and you get a “milk filling station”.

This is purely self-service as you enter a cool room, drop your money into the machine, and fill up your bottles. The milk is very fresh, your recycled bottles are environmentally friendly, and the cost is lower as well.

Our friend, Willi, deposited a euro coin into the machine, so we had a liter of cold milk to share among the four of us. Plastic cups for immediate consumption are provided.

This was so good on that hot summer day. Yes, that day’s temp registered at 32°C.
