What is happening in Egypt right now on 11211 does remind me a lot of the jarring times in East Germany before the collapse of the socialistic regime in 1989.
Back then, I had great admiration for people who would take to the streets when it just had been a few months since the deadly revolt at Tian’anmen Square.
The Nicolai Church in Leipzig, with its undistinguished façade, was the center stage during the demonstrations that helped bring down the Communist regime.
Every Monday, for months before the government collapsed, thousands of citizens gathered in front of the church chanting, Wir sind das Volk (We are the people). The citizens risked imprisonment, persecution and their lives. In the end, their vision initiated the peaceful revolution of 1989.
My thanks and appreciation go to the residents in and around Leipzig, who had marched for all of us.
I look at Egypt and hope for the same ending. Many more peaceful acts are needed to complete this road to liberty.
Facts: With more than 80 million residents, Egypt is the biggest country of the Arab world with 40% of its people living in poverty.
