More Power to African Schools
On BBC News I read this great article about a young design student, Daniel Sheridan, who hopes to use children’s unbounded energy to generate a see-saw, which in turn will generate power to supply schools with electricity in Africa. What an impressive idea!
This electricity is also needed in the evening as schools are being used for adult education, with the only light coming from candles or kerosene lamps. But several minutes of see-sawing could generate enough electricity to light a classroom for an evening.
What better way than to turn kids’ natural energy into electricity!!
This young inventor hopes to ultimately design a whole playground of fun equipment to generate enough power for a whole village.
At our school, the Frankfurt International School (F.I.S.), we have the Kalahari Experience which is going into its 17th year. Most recently a satellite dish was installed to provide a direct link between F.I.S. and the Bosheng Middle School for online teaching.
Online-teaching to African schools and designing a see-saw to create power for African schools are innovative ways to help. The way out of poverty is education, and its way out is usually brought on by caring educators.
More power to them!
