Thomas, one of the Frankfurt International Students (F.I.S.), had this to say:
“In August of 2007, I decided to try out for the 2008 Beijing honor band festival. I received a bunch of short audition pieces, which I had to practice a lot before I was going to be recorded in September. After I was recorded then in September, It wasn’t until some time in November until we received the results. I, out of all the middle school trumpet players of the international schools in the world who tried out, made it. I became a proud member of the 50 selected people in that honor band festival. On January 23 we arrived in Beijing, where we immediately began sightseeing for two days. On the third and fourth day, the whole band practiced eight hours a day. The concert was on Saturday, three days later.”
He also mentioned being interviewed by two Swedish TV reporters right after the concert. What a life!

Maria, I am so proud of Thomas. What talent he must have to play in a band like that. I love his response too.
Tell him how proud I am of him. (and of YOU ).
I love to listen to concerts like that, we just recently went to a symphony at the local University, what a joy it must be to have your child actually play in these bands.
I could go on and on about it…..

Kids attending international schools have so many more opportunities than we ever had!!
They attend math competitions in London, build schools in the Kalahari dessert, play volleyball in Poland on the weekend ….
We – meaning the ones growing up during the cold war – were raised by parents who only knew how to make ends meet.
My highlight at Thomas’s age was my very first trip to the movie theater to watch “Love Story”. I took the bus to Schweinfurt for entertainment.
He flies to China for educational purposes.
