English Study Book Recommendations

I was asked  to compile a list of recommended English study books for the summer break for a student of mine. I might as well share it with everyone. This list is geared at the 11th/12th grade of the local Gymnasium ( high school), where English is taught as a foreign language, but it also applies to any high school student learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL). The recommended books on writing are an integral part in any library – including the one of a native speaker of English.

What can I write about?

This book includes 7,000 topics for High School students.

This second edition has been updated to fit today’s topics and is a good resource for students and teachers alike.

Into the Wind

The book sypnosis reads:
“This book focuses on the often lonely efforts of individuals as they battle against the powerful forces of society, tradition and authority, particularly from the point of view of women. It is suitable for GCSE and standard grade students.”

This book is used for English literature classes at international schools.

A Fine, Fine School

This book will delight anyone – young and old- who deals with schools, students, teachers, and principals.
For students – you will see you are not the only ones feeling as if you are spending your whole life at school.
For teachers – you will see it could be worse with a principal like the one in the story.
For parents – not only are your children studying hard to get an education, but others spend long hours to get them there as well.
For principals – hand this book to your teachers to remind them how lucky they are.
Every reader will feel very grateful for having a “normal” life after having read this humorous book on school life.

Banned books and literal gatekeepers

While I was doing some research on the Grimm brothers, I came across some links that describe how several classic books are under attack because of their ‘dangerous’ content. The material is not dangerous– only what YOU do with it.

This link reminded me of my husband telling me several days ago about a caller for Dr. Laura (a radio host in the U.S.A.), who stated that The Giver by Lois Lowry (a Newbery Award winner) was a dangerous book for her child to read in school.
If that book were dangerous, would that make me a dangerous person after having read it?

Maybe then the censors would like to ban ME for reading books such as hers? Now we are getting really close to the dystopia of The Giver.

I once met the author of The Giver at a guest author’s talk at our school. She is a grandmother, has suffered the loss of a son serving in the military, and had lived overseas as a child. Her book is one of the best I’ve ever read in my life: click here

Caution! Some people consider these books dangerous!
