Autumnal Equinox 2009
Tomorrow, 22 September 2009, marks the beginning of autumn, at least in some calendars in the northern hemisphere.
The beginning of autumn season has its name from astrology and is based on the sun. On 22 September 09 at 23:19 Middle-European daylight savings time (MESZ), the sun will be in a vertical position above the equator. Also tomorrow, daylight and darkness are equally long – there are exactly twelve hours between sunrise and sundown.
For meteorologists and others, autumn begins on 1 September. The leaves are changing colors and the wind is blowing heavier than usual. Mornings are cooler and the advent of omnipresent gray skies tell us autumn is here. Some sunflowers are left to be picked in the fields and pumpkins are sold on the roadside.

In Germany, there are sunflower fields where you pick your own flowers and then leave the payment in a tin. Right now the price of a pick-it-yourself sunflower is 60 cents.
If summer had a mother, she would weep at summer’s passing.
