A new face for Camp King Germany

Sometime around September, scaffolding went up on one of the last original military housing buildings in Camp King, Oberursel. The paint job was completed a couple of weeks ago, but renovation continues with the installment of new building doors in progress.

The new color matches the rest of this otherwise modern settlement – a very light gray to compliment the other townhouses in the area.

A new face for Camp King

My preference for its original sandy color stems from a bit of nostalgia, I admit. But choosing this drab gray color for a new coat only makes it blend in with the rest of the settlement. I’d suppose this was the city council’s intention…

The nail that sticks out – or reminds us of our past – gets hammered down.

Comments

  1. … and soon our children will not even know that there was a “Camp King” here, other than by the street names.

  2. Most foreign residents of Camp King – and there are quite a few – have no idea either on what significant soil they are walking.

And to think, when we were kids the army tanks rolled and rattled through our hometown village on their way back from maneuver. The noise was deafening and we would yell “Ami, go home!” while catching the goodies they threw down. (Shame…)

Most of them have indeed gone home.

  3. 1958-1960 at Camp King, Oberursel as a dependent…My Dad was in one of those Tanks…I loved Camp King and Germany…Spent time as a dependent in Erlangen….another beautiful city…the best by far was when I was assigned to to the 97th GEN HOSP IN Frankfurt….where I had the the opportunity to travel throughout North-Central Germany…and better yet got back to Camp King to see kids climb the same trees I did when I was their age…They did not believe me when I told them…😂…Sad to see all my old haunts closed down…but I am truly happy the We no longer refer to East and West Germany…I truly love Germany and every German I had the pleasure to come into contact with…
