SpellingCity is a free website that will use your spelling list to Teach You, Test You or Play a Game (such as Match It, Alphabetize, Hang Mouse, Word Search, Unscramble, Audio Word Match, Which Word, Missing Letter, Sentence Unscramble and crosswords) – all using your spelling list. Some activities are printable as well.
This site was recommended by 5th grade teachers of an international school in Europe (Frankfurt International School).
About two million people buy Scrabble every year. I still have my edition from 1990 and it gets used a lot in the class room. I am a firm believer of playing Scrabble for teaching new words, using words as tools for strategic moves, and experiencing a bit of an adrenaline rush. It is an educational game.
Well, I also had read somewhere that writers make lousy Scrabble players. Finding the right word in writing is different from anagramming one. I can affirm this notion as my husband, an IB English teacher, is very good at finding the right words for writing, but we still need to work at his Scrabble playing skills…
I don’t really know many people who admit to playing Scrabble on a regular basis. I suppose in a way one has to be a bit off-centered to enjoy this so-called closet game in an age where every game is supposed to be a fast-moving stimulus.
Scrabble is not only a game to be played hours on end. I have learned to enjoy playing it with only 20 minutes time – there is no need to always finish the game. We adults might think no need to get started, if we can’t finish it. Wrong, I say. Scrabble is worth playing even with little time and setting it up only takes a couple of minutes.
Are you interested in becoming a good Scrabble player?
*Then learn the 101 two-letter words by heart.
*Save your blank letter to make a seven- or eight-letter word.
*Keep your letter S to form at least a word worth 25 points.
*Trouble playing the Q because you have no U? Then learn the Q-words which do not need a U: qat, qaid, qoph, faqir, qanat, tranq, qindar, qintar, sheqel, qwerty.

‘Lord of the Flies’ won the Nobel Prize in Literature. If you have read this book, you can challenge your memory with a game in literature.

This Memory game is equipped with typical Geman motives and so it serves as a nice memorabilia on your time spent in Germany. Whether you are here on a short holiday or a three-year assignment, memories of your time in Germany will always be associated with it. It also makes a good present for business visitors to take home to their kids.
The Classic Memory is not only a great game for memory training, but also for vocabulary training. The way I play it with students is that each uncovered card has to be named, e.g. “pail”, “lemon”, etc. Without giving the proper name to the card, it cannot be claimed. Of course, hints can be given. Again, this is an international game as it can be played in the native language for young learners or for teaching a foreign language. Recommendable and fun!!
